Loop and Crown
This is a Ben Seretan song. This banjo used to be his, and so did this shirt for that matter. We used to play in a band called Duchampion together. I’ve wanted to do a cover of this song for a while, and I think this was the right way to do it. Also featuring some of my fiddle playing.

Roustabout is a song found in both African-American and white banjo traditions. At least in white communities, it was used as a dance song. I play a version mostly indebted to Fred Cockerham of Round Peak, NC, but I also incorporate some of Dink Robert’s (of Haw River, NC) banjo phrasing.

Battle in the Horseshoe as played by Mike Seeger, who learned it from a 1936 field recording by Sidney Robertson Cowell of J. W. Russell of Marion, VA.

13th Floor Elevators - May the Circle Remain Unbroken
this is a beautiful, psychedelic song that reminded me of arthur russell when i heard it for the first time, of course it was recorded 10+ years before russell starting making similarly intimate and dreamy recordings. happy new year, may the circle remain unbroken.

i recently watched the classic albums “graceland” doc. i really enjoyed hearing about the process behind the album from simon, the engineer roy halee, and the musicians. the doc also included some enlightening comments from philip glass, who i didn’t know was a friend of paul simon’s.
this was simon’s second attempt at a video for this song. he said that he wished, in retrospect, that it wasn’t so comedic since the song itself was not so light. however, it did, admittedly, include a penis joke (“short little span of attention”).
